Skin Care For All Ages, Home-Remedies, & Budget Friendly

Let’s face it, we’ve all been guilty of making skin-care mistakes. Though once we begin climbing in age we can really start to see the effects of skipping out on sunscreen, or the times we were too tired to wash our face! I understand navigating through the changes in our skin can be overwhelming, but remember it’s never too early to too late to start creating a regime that’s right for you!

In your 20’s –

We’d all like to think we’re invincible in our 20’s, but staying out late with friends and having a few drinks can really take a toll on our face. The first habit you should develop is not sleeping in your makeup! No one wants clogged pores and breakouts that remind you of your teenage years and investing in a great cleanser is your first step towards an effective skin care regime.

Budget Friendly: Olay Total Effects 7 in 1 Foaming Cleanser – Great for all skin types and fulfills most skin concerns.

This combination will also act as a natural exfoliator, and rejuvenates the skin! Adding a drop or two of lemon essential oil will help in retaining moisture! Feel free to also add honey 😀

Remember to cleanse morning and night to remove excess oil, dirt, and makeup from the skin. In the daytime the sun will really take a toll on our skin and speed up the aging process, which isn’t fun for anyone! Remembering to use SPF on a daily is something you’ll thank yourself for later on in life!

Budget Friendly: Lotus Safe Sun 3-in-1 Matte Look Daily Sunblock SPF 40 – This sunscreen combines broad-spectrum UBA and UVB protection along with skin-lightening ingredients! It will give a matte finish to the skin and has a non-greasy feel!

In your 30’s –

Maybe a few lines that weren’t there before are starting to become more noticeable as we look into the mirror, especially around the eye area. Not to mention the volume loss around our mouth and nose (nasolabial fold) area. Even though we’ve been taking good care of our skin during our 20’s there are a few more products to add to the skin care regime as we enter our 30’s!

In addition to our daily SPF protection, we should be choosing a moisturizer packed full of anti-oxidant rich ingredients to help skin fight free radicals and soften fine lines! Some anti-oxidants to look for are green or white teas, Vitamin A, Vitamin E, and pomegranate! To combat redness, feverfew is a natural ingredient that will help combat any unwanted rosiness!

Budget Friendly: FabIndia Vitamin E Daily Moisturizing Cream – This moisturizer made with olive oil and beeswax will provide hydration while maintaining skins elasticity.

High End: Peter Thomas Roth Ultra-Lite Oil-Free Moisturizer- This is a gel-lotion packed with antioxidant vitamins A and E, aloe vera, and hyaluronic acid to help fight signs of aging!

Home Remedy: A cup of buttermilk, half an avocado, two tablespoons of honey, and a dash of olive oil will leave your skin feeling soft and smooth. The oil produced from the avocado is found to actually dissolve pore-clogging dirt, and lecithin in avocado will help to restore and balance the skin! These are all natural ingredients and you don’t have to worry about any added chemicals or a high price tag! You can also add a finely chopped almond for some extra exfoliation! 😀

Not only should we be using moisturizer morning and night after cleansing, but including an eye-cream is extremely important now to fight against crows-feet, puffiness, and dark circles.

Budget Friendly: Lakme Youth Infinity Skin Firming Eye Cream – Suitable for all skin types with luminizing pearls to instantly brighten the eye area for a more youthful appearance.

Home Remedy: Pineapple slices are a great way to gently exfoliate and de-puff the sensitive skin under the eyes. One of the active ingredients in pineapple is bromelain, an anti-inflammatory agent that is also a natural form of alpha hydroxy acid, which will help in combating fine-lines and wrinkles!

In your 40’s and 50’s

Retinol is definitely not an option now as we must focus on combating lines and wrinkles and also building collagen. Another noticeable concern is that our skin may becoming dryer than it used to be and the skin on our neck and decollate is thinner. Retinol is no longer an option and is a now a must-have product! Look for anti-aging serums or creams with retinoids as well as peptides, which will help rebuild collagen, along with anti-oxidants to continue fighting free radicals and prevent aging. Remember to always apply SPF during the day when using a product containing retinol as it has the tendency to attract the sun.

Budget Friendly: Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair Moisturizer- A great over the counter anti-wrinkle cream that features a unique combination of Retinol SA, Glucose Complex, and Hyaluronic Acid. Not only will it aid in smoothing wrinkles but it will also help to diminish the look of age spots!

High End: Peter Thomas Roth Retinol Fusion PM This is a very potent serum with concentrated encapsulated retinol for maximum results without much irritation. Along with vitamins C and E, this serum will help improve skin tone, texture, and aid in the reproduction of collagen!

Home Remedy: Retinol is present in a lot of foods we eat, such as carrots, mangoes, apricots, sweet potatos, raw tomatos, raw spinach, oranges, broccoli, and bell peppers. However when consuming them try to avoid adding products high in saturated fat, such as vegetable oil or cooking spray, and instead boil or steam them. For a quick homemade retinol mask at home try boiling 3 large carrots until they’re soft enough to be mashed. Cover them with 4 1/2 tablespoons of honey, then mash them into a paste that you can apply to your skin. Leave on for at least 10 minutes before rinsing with cool water and a towel!

In your 50’s and 60’s

This is the decade of collagen loss mainly due to the effects of menopause, which affects nearly every woman in her 50s causing a steady decline in estrogen. Skin becomes much dryer and the loss of elasticity becomes more noticeable. Make sure to continue the use of those antioxidant serums and creams and SPF during the day along with your eye creams after you’ve cleansed. You may want to purchase a product with a slightly higher percentage of retinol and also make sure to keep a great exfoliating treatment around to slough away dead skin cells, encouraging cell turnover and boosting collagen production.

Products that contain any natural exfoliators, such as alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), will help to clear up menopausal acne, aid in stimulating collagen production, and increase cellular turnover by sloughing away dead skin!

Budget Friendly: Lakme Youth Infinity Serum – This product will help to increase your skins luminosity and add a glow! It is great for treating blemish spots, age spots, and helps to smooth the skins surface. This serum is infused with collagen boosters to help penetrate deep into the skin, and also includes the ingredient niacinamide to help lighten skin.

High End: Ole Henriksen Lemon Strip Flash Peel – Contains a 20 percent alpha hydroxy acid complex with glycolic, lactic, as well as multi-fruit acids (a blend of 5 botanical extracts), which will aid in resurfacing the skin by dissolving away dead skin cells. This is a wonderful addition to your skin care regime, and don’t worry about it being too harsh as active ingredients, such as purified algae extract along with bio saccharide are there to calm, soothe, and nourish the skin!

Home Remedy: Pineapple, Papaya, and Honey facial mask! Use 1 cup of fresh pineapple and mash it, or use a food processor, with ½ of a papaya until you’ve created a smooth creamy texture. Add in 1 tablespoon of honey and mix well. After applying, leave on for 10 – 15 minutes before rinsing! These fruits contain natural enzymes as well as alpha hydroxyl acids to exfoliate and get rid of dead skin cells, leaving your skin feeling smooth and refreshed!
